Looking across all the evidence, I would say that people's lives have not been getting worse in the UK over the last few decades. As a rough approximation, happiness has run flat. (To be clear, this is for the average person, and here I should mention that there are some temporary cyclical movements in happiness, caused by rises and falls in the economy, and particularly in the unemployment rate).
